- THE FOLLOWING LOW-LEVEL FORMAT PROCEDURE
- WILL DESTROY ALL DATA ON YOUR HARD DRIVE
- BACK-UP THE DATA ON YOUR DRIVE BEFORE
- CONTINUING WITH LOW LEVEL FORMAT ROUTINE
-
-
- The format instructions that you follow are simple procedures to tell
- the computer that you have either one or two Winchester disk drives
- installed and prepares your operating system to recognize the Western
- Digital controller.
-
- You will need to know the parameters of your hard disk drives. As a
- convenience to you, we have included a list of the most common hard
- disk drives and their parameters. To access this list, return to the
- STORAGE CONTROLLER menu. If your drive is not listed, contact your
- drive manufacturer or consult your drive manual to determine drive
- type and parameters.
-
-
- CAUTION
- Avoid system damage by consulting your
- Technical Reference manual to ensure that your
- drive type is supported by your host BIOS drive
- tables. Not all AT-compatibles share the same
- drive tables as IBM.
-
-
- The motherboard BIOS in many older IBM PC AT's or AT compatible
- systems do not recognize the 26 sector per track feature of RLL type
- hard disk drives. You may perform a low level format of your RLL
- drives by one of two methods: 1) Use a third party software such as
- Storage Dimensions'or Ontrack; perform the low level format by using
- the BIOS ROM on-board the WD1003V-SR1 or WD1003V-SR2 controller.
-
- Low Level Format Using Third Party Software:
-
- Consult your dealer for further information regarding Storage
- Dimensions', Ontrack or other third party software. Follow the
- instructions provided by the software manufacturer.

-
- Low Level Format Using On-board BIOS ROM:
-
- 1. Turn on the power.
-
- 2. At the A> prompt, load and run the DOS DEBUG utility. Type
- DEBUG followed by a RETURN. ("CR" stands for carriage return or
- "enter".)
-
-
- A>DEBUG (CR)
-
- 3. At the DEBUG prompt (-), begin the controller format program by
- typing the following:
-
-
- -g=cc00:5
-
- CAUTION
-
- HAVE YOU BACKED UP ALL DATA ON YOUR
- HARD DISK DRIVE?
-
- The controller format program displays a menu. Follow the menu
- selections one through six. The Change Current Drive Parameters
- selection allows you to choose preprogrammed drive parameters or you
- may enter the parameters from the keyboard.
-
- Low level formatting the drive sets up track, sector, and error
- correction information and initializes the data fields. The "surface
- analysis" performs a thorough scan of the drive's media. Running the
- surface analysis may take several hours. The "verify drive" option
- is a shorter version of the surface analysis test. Both tests report
- any defects found and prompts the user to map out these defects.
-
- The "enter defect list" option allows the user to enter the defects
- provided by the drive manufacturer. "Select next drive" allows you
- to change drives.
-
- 5. Partition your drive using the DOS FDISK program.
-
- 6. Complete high level format by using the "FORMAT C:/S" or "FORMAT
- D:/S" command in your operating system.

- Troubleshooting
-
- Problem: 1790 Disk 0 Error.
-
- Cause: No low level format on hard disk. Wrong drive type
- selected. Not enough drive power. Bad cables. Improper
- drive selection or termination.
-
- Problem: Drive does not partition.
-
- Cause: Check drive types. Note that drive types for the AT
- and AT-compatibles differ.
-
- Problem: "Error Reading Fixed Disk" appears when booting from
- hard drive.
-
- Cause: DOS partition not active.
-
- Problem: Winchester activity LED continuously lit.
-
- Cause: No problem. Drive LED selected for latched mode.
-
- Problem: DOS returns a seek or ID not found error.
-
- Cause: One possible cause of this problem is a minor incompati-
- bility between the WD1003V-SR1 or SR2 and the older
- WD1003-RAH or (WD1003-RA2). If the drive has more than
- eight heads (for instance, a 16 head drive), the WD1003-
- WAH numbers heads 8 through 15 as 0 through 7 in the
- media's ID fields. Contrawise, the WD1003V-SR1/SR2
- numbers heads 8 through 15 as 8 through 15. To
- solve the problem, back up and reformat the drive. This
- is not manifested in drives with less than eight heads.
- If this is not the cause of the error, then you have a
- drive problem.
-
- Problem: Slow and inefficient operation.
-
- Cause: The biggest cause for this problem is an incorrect
- interleave factor. Therefore, some experimentation with
- the interleave factor may be necessary. (Refer to the
- format instructions for setting interleave factor).
- Interleave factors are very dependent on the host
- operating system and application.
-
- Problem: Not getting full capacity from drive.
-
- Cause: You may have an MFM type drive. Consult your drive
- manual. The WD1003V-SR1/2 are designed for use with RLL
- type drives only. DO NOT USE WITH MFM DRIVES.
